Re-Walled

‘‘Life has to do with walls; we are continuously going in and out back and forth and through them; a wall is the quickest, the thinnest, the thing we’re always transgressing, and that is why I see it as the present, the most surface condition.’’

Land reforms, implemented in Iran during the 1340s (1960s), were designed to create fundamental changes in the structure and laws of land ownership. These reforms had profound and far-reaching effects on the country’s social and economic fabric, to the extent that the issue of land ownership in Iran today has become of paramount importance.

In Iran’s current economic conditions, factors such as population growth, urban expansion, and resource limitations have made land ownership an extremely valuable investment. This importance has increased to such an extent that land is now considered one of the most important assets for individuals.

One of the common methods for declaring and emphasizing land ownership is separating it from the surrounding environment. This separation is usually done through the creation of barriers, installation of fences, and especially wall construction. These measures, in addition to defining the boundaries of ownership, are also considered a form of declaration and establishment of ownership.
